Summer Heat

Summer has hit us with a vengeance and that means a lot of excess heat for our bonsai. Now is the time to start keeping a very keen eye on your bonsai to make sure they don’t get too dry in their pots. Trees can dry out very quick especially in ceramic pots. Trees which are thickening up in the ground should be okay but it’s best to water them every few days in drought.

Yesterday was the hottest day of the year here so far. I came home to wilted herbs and a few flowers but my trees seem to be okay. Make sure they get a lot of water if it’s been hot all day.

Top tip: Water at dusk when it is cool so that the sun won’t scorch the leaves. The water can act as a magnifying glass on the leaves.

Keep them in semi-shade so they don’t get dry too quickly especially on very sunny and warm days. Enjoy the sun but keep an eye on those trees!
