2 New Holly Trees for Bonsai

Posted in Tree choice by Adam

I have accquired two small holly trees today which I am going to try out as bonsai. I’ve never seen a holly bonsai before so it will be a good experiment. They are not the common holly we get in this country, the leaves are more rounded and less spiky. I’ve yet to identify them but am fairly excited about them.

I’ll get a few pictures of them up tomorrow.

Time for Planting Seeds

Posted in Weather & Seasons by Adam

It’s about this time of the year I like to plant some tree seeds (04/11/07). I think it’s best to let nature take it’s course and allow the changing of the seasons to bring your seeds to life. I know that a lot of people go through various strange methods of scarification, soaking, freezing, stratification, warming and so on. Quite frankly I can’t be bothered with all of that and a lot of it I don’t even understand as I’m sure lots of other people don’t either.

I find the best way is to get seeds at autumn time and drop them into pots. It’s the natural time of the year to do it, all you are doing is to move the seeds further from the parent.

So far I’ve planted paper bark maple, Japanese atropurpeum maple, hornbeam and yew. I intend to plant a few more different types this week and then play the waiting game until spring!

End of the Growth

Posted in Weather & Seasons by Adam

This years growth has all but ceased on the bonsai and we are now waiting and watching for spring.  Winter is a bit of a miserable time of the year but bonsai can look extremely dramatic when they are bare without their leaves like now.  It can bring on a whole new air of magnificence which you cannot see at any other time of the year.

It’s been a busy week for me in many different ways.  I went on a trip to Westonbirt which was fantastic and a lot busier than I thought it would be.  Everytime I go to Westonbirt I seem to forget my camera.  This time I got there, spotted a good photo opportunity, got my camera out only to find there was no battery in it.  So I apologize for the lack of photos from the trip!

I have added a few different types of seeds to the bonsai art store.
