Newly Styled Willow Tree

Posted in Wiring by Adam

One of my yamadori finds from this winter was this lovely willow tree. At least I’m pretty sure it’s a type of willow because it is a lot harder trying to identify trees in the winter. Only time will tell if I’m correct.
It’s quite a bushy looking tree at about 2 foot tall. I’ve trimmed a few of the major branches off the bottom and also reduced the height a bit.

I’ve bought some mega 4mm wire from eBay this week so decided to give it a go on this tree as you can see. Some of the branches are slightly too big for the wire to manipulate and I’d probably do better with a bending jack.

I think it’s going to look very good come spring when it’s all leafy and I should be able to develop a good crown quickly on it.

New Yamadori Hawthorn - my biggest yet (part 3)

Posted in Styling & Pruning by Adam

Today I carved my hawthorn using hand tools including a stanley knife and a large penknife. I tried to tear off as much as I could to give it more of a natural look but it is so thick it took a long time to remove any amount of wood. I am happy with the largest branch on the right hand side but I might go back and carve the one on the left a bit further later on.

It’s been painted with lime sulphur to preserve the deadwood.

Not Long Until Spring

Posted in Weather & Seasons by Adam

I’ve been outside today and noticed the garden is starting to wake up! A few of my tree’s buds are getting ready to open and it won’t be long now until spring.

Best Way To Collect Yamadori

Posted in Yamadori by Adam

I’ve tried a lot of different ways to collect trees and keep them alive while doing so. Here is the only way I’ve found that makes sure they survive:

You will need - a plastic bag, a bin bag, a cable tie, a shovel, a branch cutter

1. Dig up the tree at the location trimming the roots and branches to your desired size. It’s important to do this roughly now as it can’t be changed afterwards.

2. Get a plastic bag and put water in it.

3. Swill the water around the bag and tip out the excess water.

4. Wrap the plastic bag around the roots and secure the bag on with a cable tie.

5. Place the whole tree in a bin bag.

6. Take home and plant directly in the ground.

7.* Leave the tree in the ground for a year before planting in a pot.

*You can skip this part and plant in a pot if you do not have to prune too many roots from the tree and it has lots of healthy fibrous roots.
