Lawson’s cypress

I have been trying to decide on a direction for a conifer that I own which does not seem to have any direction in it whatsoever! I am determined with this one as it is such a challenge. Here is what it looked like after it’s first drastic cut:

Cypress 1

Quite unrefined i’m sure you’ll agree… I was left with three main branches from halfway up and the branches all come out of the trunk on only two sides parallel to each other. This is not an easy tree to make into a bonsai I have found out!

Today I decided on another major cut and removed one of the major branches. Here is the current product:

Cypress 2

A bit better but still lacks something. Worse still I have now found out that they do not bud easily on mature bark (after the cut). Any suggestions welcomed!

This one is a little bit rugged now but with a little help … and 3-5 years :) this will be a great tree.

At first I was thinking about a very informal upright the could be done with patient wiring. But I don’t see too many very informal uprights in nature, so if your a true realist that may not be the best.

Another thing that might be cool is to lean it just slightly to one side and wire all the branches in that direction to give it a windswept and very natural look.

Most importantly is to build out those think roots for a while then put it in something very shallow.

just some ideas .. I am a long long ways from being a master

some inspiration for ya (google image search)

Thanks very much for those ideas! I think I might go with the windswept idea that might work quite well with this tree.
That third picture of the old veteran cypress is really something else it is amazing. I will post some new pictures when I restyle it.

you mast style a lawson cypress which is suited to the style of the tree in the wild? otherwise it becomes un-natural becaoz the style of foliage is upright and the branch too?

so this is a difficult one? i recentalu aquired one?
the main tecnique which is useful is to just expose the main trunk and few main branch? the trick is not to remove mach foliage but trime it to aquire more new growth elswhere
