Does a tree look better with moss around the base or not? I think moss around the base of your bonsai can increase the interest and age in a tree and make it something extra special. I think moss is cool.
Whether moss decides to grow in your pot is another thing. It is up to the will of the universe whether it thinks your bonsai needs moss or not. Moss is usually found in damp areas and this is not something that you constantly want in your pot. Moss can however be added to your pot if it’s not found readily growing there. It is quite simple to extract it from where it is growing and place it in the pot. If you find some extremely dry moss that looks like it might be dead, do not be fooled. Moss can stay dry for months at a time before bursting into life at the first sign of moisture.
When you acquire a piece of moss for your pot you want to:
- Loosely shape it so that it will fit around the trunk of your tree.
- Water moss and soil in pot copiously.
- Place around the trunk pressing down fairly firmly to hold in place.
I’ve found that moss can blow off quite easily in the first few days of being in the pot. If this happens, repeat the steps again and cross your fingers.
