Redwood as Bonsai (part 2)

Posted on July 17th, 2007 in Tree choice by Adam

I have come to a decision about my dawn redwood. I cut off about a foot or two of branches to bring it down to 6 foot tall. I think it might still be too big but I’m going to leave it as it is for now so I can think about it for a bit longer.

I made some fairly drastic cuts as all the growth was happening at the top and I want to encourage it further down the trunk. It’s looking pretty bare and thin at the moment.

I’ve taken it out of it’s pot (which was jam-packed with roots). It looks like it’s been in the pot a bit too long as it was. It’s now up the back of the garden in my tree nursery. I intend to leave it there for a year to develop the branches and bit and let it thicken up slightly. I am paranoid about leaving it in the ground too long because I don’t know how quickly redwood roots spread.

I’m still deciding where the first lower branch should be as I’m not used to making bonsai this big and finding it all quite new. Lower down I’ve noticed that it’s starting to develop the flaky bark that large redwoods have. All-in-all an exciting project that I can’t wait to see develop further.
