The Alder is a very interesting tree which up until recently I wasn’t sure of. Theres a lot of them in the place where I work and have been meaning to identify them for some time. It is a normal type of deciduous tree but is unique in the fact that it has cones like pine or cypress trees. Apparently they are sometimes used for bonsai but I haven’t seen any or tried it myself yet.
They grow fairly quickly and are very hardy. They grow well in most places, even acidic areas or damaged from mining and burnt patches. They are often found growing very close to water as they can survive well half submerged, finding their own oxygen while their roots are drowned.
The flowers they grow are catkins, which appear in spring often before leaves start emerging.
Seeds now available at the Bonsai Art Store
