Description Fact Sheet
The english oak is in my opinion the best looking tree in Great Britain. It is a very majestic tree and the main iconic tree that we have in the UK. They can look great as bonsai but are quite fussy and need some specialist treatment.
The oak is very long lived tree and has been known to live for over 1000 years in the UK. It produces acorns as seeds in the autumn.
Origin: Europe from Ireland to the Caucasus and north to Scandinavia.
Height: 35m/115ft
Shape: Broadly spreading
Deciduous
Pollinated: Wind
Leaf Shape: Elliptic to obovate, lobed
Appearance

The oak grows up to 45m tall and can have a spread of 25m or more. They have unique looking leaves which have 3-7 pairs of rounded lobes on each. The trunk develops deep ruts in it quite early in it’s life.

Potential as a bonsai

The oak can be a beautiful looking bonsai. It should be treated as any other bonsai with regular feeding and watering. The problem comes when you are repotting. Oaks are very fussy when it comes to tampering with their roots. They don’t like to be disturbed much. I find it best to repot only in mid-winter when the tree is dormant but others say that you should do it in summer straight after a heavy watering.
