Silver Birch - Betula pendula

Posted in Misc. by Adam
Description Fact Sheet
The silver birch is a very tough tree being able to cope well against cold or long periods of drought. It is a pioneer tree meaning it will be one of the first to colonize bare areas of land. However it does have quite a short lifespan being lucky to live past 80 years. As a bonsai it can be a pretty tree but the leaves are quite far apart so do look a bit odd. Origin: Europe and northern Asia, from the Atlantic to the Pacific.
Height: 30m/100ft
Shape: Narrowly seeping
Deciduous
Pollinated: Wind
Leaf Shape: Ovate to triangular
Appearance

The silver birch has bright white/silver bark which develops corky fissures with age. It has catkins which appear in early spring.

Potential as a bonsai

It’s not particularly recommended as a bonsai, the main reason being that the leaves are too far apart from each other leaving it looking very bare. It can be done however as long as the tree is very large.
