A Years Worth of Growth

A bonsai can grow so much in a year, but unless you take photographs it is very hard to notice the change. I have taken a few photos of my trees at the start of this year and again this week to see the difference.

One of the most dramatic changes this year has been my new birch which I was given back in March. It was about 6 foot tall at the time so I chopped it down to about 2 foot. It was attached to a piece of driftwood and had only two branches at the top. Here it is back in March:

The change is so great that I suspect some people might not even believe that it is the same tree! Here it is now in August:

I think that it grew back with such vigour this year because it was chopped and repotted before it budded in spring. There was masses of sugars stored from the previous year and it put these to good use growing brand new branches and leaves.

Of course most bonsai won’t have such major changes as this. That is why you should take regular photos so that you can see the amount that your trees are changing because it is hard to notice otherwise.
